TAMPA, FL. – Although snowfall is uncommon in Florida, it did occur in 2025 and may occur again this weekend.
What we know:
With lows falling into the upper 30s and highs only in the 50s in Tampa on Thursday and Friday, temperatures are falling throughout Florida.
However, FOX Weather models indicate that snow may fall in the northern part of the state.
Snowfall would occur on Saturday night and into Sunday.
Why would Florida experience snowfall this weekend?
FOX Weather meteorologists said after an initial surge of Arctic air this week that triggered cold weather alerts across areas in the Southeast through Thursday, a reinforcing shot of bitter cold is expected to push into the South from Canada, setting the stage for an interaction with moisture being drawn north out of the Gulf.
This weekend, snowfall over the Panhandle may be possible due to the overlap of freezing temperatures and moisture.
What we don’t know: Whether a powerful enough area of low pressure will form off the Southeast coast to bring snow to the area is still up in the air.
The backstory
When snowfall swept across the northern part of the state in January 2025, a section of Interstate 10 was closed for several hours.
On Tuesday, the Florida Highway Patrol shared a picture of one of its cars with snow on the ground near the Pensacola state line.
Last year, Floridians discovered that the Sunshine State experiences about a dozen snowfall events.
Tampa snowfall of 1977
The snow did not fall in Tampa in 2025, but it did in 1977.
The snowfall occurred at the tail end of a powerful Arctic cold front that swept quickly over the state between late January 18 and early January 19, according to NWS.
According to the NWS, Plant City had two inches of snow and Tampa received.20 inches.
What you are able to do:
Snow may fall this weekend in northern Florida, southern Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, according to meteorologists.
Southerners are urged to closely monitor the weather forecast.
