The report identifies the counties with the highest per capita property tax charges.

A new research reveals which counties in Florida have imposed the highest levies, as the debate over property tax cuts reaches a fever pitch.

According to that research, which was released this month by the nonprofit Florida Tax Watch, local governments in the state spend more than $120 billion a year.

According to the research, “local taxing and spending is a major part of Florida government operations.” “More than half of all Florida government revenue is raised at the local level, the largest share in the nation.”

In order to determine which counties impose the highest overall property taxes per capita, researchers from the nonprofit organization utilized state data.

The analysis begins by examining which of the 50 major communities in Florida experienced the greatest increase in property taxes from 2014 to 2024.

Central Florida is home to several of the top-ranked cities on this list:

RankCityGrowth Rate
1Apopka372%

16Clearwater155.8%
17Miami Gardens155.7%
18Palm Coast152.9%
19Port Orange150.6%
20Miami150.3%

The list was created while Florida lawmakers are drafting reform plans for the state’s property tax for the upcoming legislative year.

Earlier this year, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called on lawmakers to put a constitutional measure on the ballot in 2026, demonstrating his strong support for lowering the state’s property taxes.

In order to prevent misunderstanding, the governor has criticized the House’s several ideas and advocated for a single, complete amendment.

In any case, property taxes are a local matter that supports agencies like the fire and police departments. Therefore, in order for the state to take any action, an amendment would need to be approved by 60 percent of voters in the following election.

In the meantime, the counties with the highest per-capita property tax levies are as follows:
